To Be / Ser y Estar

 There are two verbs in Spanish that have the English meaning to be. These verbs are ser and estar

 Each of these verbs has very definite uses, and they are not interchangeable.

The verb ser is derived from the Latin verb esse, from which is also derived the English word essence. The verb ser is therefore used to express an inherent quality or characteristic. The verb estar, on the other hand, is derived from the Latin verb stare, from which is also derived the English word state. The verb estar is therefore used to express a temporary state or condition.

 

Hay dos verbos en español que tienen el significado Inglés to be. Estos verbos son ser y estar.

  Cada uno de estos verbos tienen usos muy definidos, y no son intercambiables. El verbo ser  deriva del verbo del latín esse, de donde también  deriva la palabra essence del  Inglés. Por tanto, el verbo ser se usa para expresar una cualidad inherente o una característica. El verbo estar, por otra parte, deriva del  verbo del latín stare , de la que también  deriva la palabra state  en Inglés. Por tanto, el verbo estar se utiliza para expresar un estado o condición temporal.

 A modo de simplificar el verbo ser  en español indica una cualidad durarera y el verbo estar expresa una acción o  un estado temporal. Ser es algo  fijo y estar es algo transitorio.

 Simplifying, the verb  ser indicates an inherent  quality and the verb estar indicates an action  or an state temporary. Ser is something fixed and Estar is something transitory.

 

Juan es medico.                   Juan is a doctor.

Leira es guapa.                     Leira is beautiful.

Marta es lista.                       Marta is clever.

 

Juan está triste.                    Juan is sad.

Leira está cansada.               Leira is tired.

Marta está llorando.               Marta is crying.

 

We can observed, how the verb ser indicates an action or an inherent quality that is proper of the individual, but with the verb estar it can be observed how it is an action or an attribute given for a time.

 

Observamos  cómo el verbo ser indica una acción o cualidad inherente es decir que es propia del individuo, pero  con el verbo estar observamos que esa acción o cualidad es por un tiempo determinado.
